Packaging Engineer - Northvolt

Description : Packaging Engineer. Company : Northvolt. Location : Stockholm

About us and the role
Northolt’s journey started in Västerås, Sweden with Northvolt Labs, a prototyping factory already in operation. The first phase of giga-factory - Northvolt Ett in Skellefteå has just start manufacturing, while further expansion project has already kicked off (Gothenburg, Germany and Canada). In Poland we are just to commission a new Northvolt Systems assembly plant. In joining us you will play an important part from a very early stage, building the landscape of first large scale European battery factories. Northvolt will play a significant role in the transformation to a carbon free society and “Making Oil History” with the mission of Building the Worlds Greenest Battery!

To put Northolt’s rapid growth into perspective, 4 years ago we only shipped parcels while today and, in the future, we’ll have thousands of containers crossing the oceans with an exponential growth ahead of us. Pretty amazing, right?

Now we have an awesome job offer for a Packaging Engineer, to join our excellent and passionate team in Stockholm. In this role you will work across the entire Northvolt business unit landscape and assist the organisation with your expertise in the field of packaging. You will play a pivotal role in Northvolt’s successful growth in Sweden, Poland and beyond.

We:

In broad terms and without going into too much detail, Logistics Team looks after everything that moves or needs to be stored. Other than that, for materials, components, finished goods or waste to travel or be stored safely, they need to be packed, palletised and secured safely.

Our job is:

  • to support Northolt’s mission, growth and expansion with quality planning and logistics design

  • to build a scalable operational and organisational framework, within which Northvolt units execute and

  • to enable a sustainable, resilient, and efficient supply chain

You:

First and foremost - you are a real packaging enthusiast and ambassador. You are passionate about packaging, and you understand how a correctly designed packaging secures the product, how it impacts transportation filling rate and contributes to lower cost and emissions. Furthermore, you know how the packaging interacts with automation and how easy and user friendly it should be when handled manually. Ideally, you have experience, and thrive, in an environment of very quick growth, where you are not always in possession of all information you'd wish for, and where data at hand may be incomplete. You are superb at building your internal network and enjoy cross functional collaboration, and to build understanding of the business value packaging design brings to a company.

As Packaging Engineer, and in liaison with other Northvolt stakeholders, you will:

  • be responsible of defining and implementing packaging solution for incoming materials in our cell production based on Northvolt requirements.
  • responsible for managing labelling requirement and implementation with suppliers and internal stakeholders.

  • align packaging design with material suppliers and document the packaging specifications.

  • secure transportation of materials both to, between and within site in a cost-efficient way.
  • lead continuous improvement activities within the area of packaging and material handling through daily communication and support with the operations in the factory.
  • support quality team in the claim process in case of packaging nonconformities.
  • collect lessons learned and translate it to requirements for design of future factories related to material and process handling, automated storage solutions and supplier constraints – all with an awareness of sustainability and cost impact.
  • educate Northvolt stakeholders in importance of packaging.

You primary working location will be either Stockholm, Västerås or Skellefteå.

To be able to do all above, and depending on your working location, you will need to travel 1-3 days per month visiting our plant in Skellefteå, securing close collaboration with material handling, material flow and expansion, as well as local supplier quality team and the process engineers. Many of your key stakeholders are also located at our head office in Stockholm.

  • We require that you are having experience in building things from scratch – preferable in an environment where processes were not yet in place and compliance was poor
  • You can explain complex things in an easy and digestible manner enabling you to have the right level of influence when collaborating with different stakeholders who are not necessarily packaging experts
  • You love diversity. We are 100+ nationalities at Northvolt!
